Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the only one meant for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domain names remained online.

There are no particular conditions on who can reserve a .NAME domain name, but in order to maintain the objective behind its establishment alive, the Registry organization may check who the Registrant is and if there is no connection between the owner and the actual domain, the registration may be challenged.
